MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
$3.85 was the price for regular unleaded gas on April 9th in Montgomery.
The price almost two months later is a 65 cents difference. Drivers say what a relief.
David Sellers filled up his SUV at the Entec on Wetumpka Highway in Montgomery.
"It's definitely a good thing to see. I'll take $3.15 over $3.50 any day," Sellers said.
That's the price for unleaded gas at that station.
Alvin Williams uses premium gas and says he's definitely noticing the difference in his pockets.
"Last time I pumped it was $63. And today it was $50," Williams said.
The Amerson family is returning from Gulf Shores for the holiday.
David filled up at a gas station in Prattville. He says surprisingly he spent $100 on gas roundtrip.
"Usually this is the start of the higher gas prices, so it was interesting to see it drop so quickly," Amerson said.
Nationwide, gas is 30 cents cheaper than it was this time last year. But what's causing it to drop? Well experts say part of it's because tensions with Iran have eased. Last year Iran was threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz that's a main supply route for 20% of the world's oil.
Also supplies are more plentiful. Oil and gas supplies are actually at their highest levels since 1990. And finally, the third reason we're seeing gas prices lower, is because of the economy.
"The better it is, the better my pocket is," Williams said.
The highest gas price spotted in Montgomery is $3.64 a gallon. That's the same as the national average. But even though that may be considered high in Montgomery, it's still lower than what everyone was experiencing this time last year.
