NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Baseball great Cal Ripken Jr. is teaming up with Energizer Batteries on a 13-city tour to bring positive energy to communities.
"We can all chip in and do things and really impact change," Ripken said.
The project is part of a revitalization of an East Nashville neighborhood that Habitat for Humanity officials hope will spread from one home to another.
"A Brush With Kindness is a program designed to help existing homeowners with low income who couldn't otherwise make repairs necessary to their home - to provide a good, safe and healthy home environment," said Habitat For Humanity Chief Operating Officer Ralph Knauss.
"My house was falling down on me, and I wasn't able to do any work on it. This was a blessing from the Lord. Thank you, Jesus," said homeowner William Montgomery.
Twenty-eight people will work for four days to fix what one man had needed for 15 years.
The Energizer crew drove five hours from St. Louis to help waterproof and airproof this home.
It was a tough job, though, even for an athlete like Ripken.
"You think you might be in fairly decent shape. You can run down the basketball court or you can take ground balls or hit batting practice for 30 minutes with your son. But when you start hammering into the ceiling, you realize how your arm starts getting a whole lot more tired," said Ripken.
