MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Some MPS students are taking the first steps toward a career in medicine.  They're a part of the Health Science Academy at Jeff Davis High School.  And Thursday night, the students were honored for their achievements.

The program gives students an up-close look at the medical profession, one they wouldn't get otherwise.

"This year, since we've been interning and we've been going to the hospital, and we've been following registered nurses, it really makes want to do it, because of the relationship they have with their patients," said Ashley Caffey, who was named student of the year.

"I've seen tremendous growth, growth in skill development, growth with leadership development, and confidence," said Kwanza Thomas, an instructor with the academy.

Montgomery County Commissioner Ham Wilson has supported the program and said the training makes students very attractive in the job market.

"There's such a shortage of health care professionals and workers in our area and in our state," Wilson said.  "And we're hopeful these young people will continue their education and come back to Montgomery."

130 students take part in the academy, and in a few years, you may see them in a clinic near you.
