MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's been a two day crunch for Renee Williams and her crew.

"I actually wrote it in a matter of about two weeks," Independent Film Director Renee Williams said.

For the first time, this Baldwin County native is going from behind the scenes as an actress to leading the way as director, writer and producer of her independent film "Carolyn Somebody."

Williams says she's been in the industry six years and is a recent graduate of the Entertainment Media Production & Crew Training (E.M.P.A.C.T.) program. Some of her classmates are helping with the project.

"As soon as I came out of that program I knew I was ready to shoot a movie. I wrote my first script and here we are," Williams said.

This 10 minute short film features homegrown talent like 8-year-old Olivia Mitchell of Wetumpka who plays Carolyn, a little girl raised in the foster care system.

"I'm just happy to be in the movie," Mitchell said.

"I've always wanted to say you know these children who are helpless, what can we do, how can we do more?" Williams asked.

Birmingham native Cherie Fields plays high-power attorney Stephanie who learns the importance of giving during a humbling encounter with Carolyn.

"Pursue your dreams, never let that die. There's a lot more opportunities here in Alabama than people realize," Fields said.

"[It's a] wonderful statement about the script, that's coming from the script so it's really good that's it's something home that I can work on," Alabama State University Theatre Graduate and professional actress Elizabeth Stewart said.

The film is expected to be available on DVD next month. Williams plans on hosting a public viewing in Montgomery.

And this won't be the last of Williams, she's already working on another short film that will debut in November and a feature film shoot next year.

Dr. Tonea Stewart is also featured in this film, playing the role of Carolyn's grandmother.
