MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
If
you need to drill a hole and turn a screw, you need to swap out the bits,
right? Well the HalfTime Drill Driver
may allow you to drill and drive without opening the chuck on your drill, if it
works. It's an adapter for your home
drill that can hold two bits. It works
by placing a drill bit in one side and a driver bit in the other. A blue metal collar secures the bit and
slides down the shaft to switch the bits with a spin.
The
package comes with a bit and driver kit.
The smaller drill bit is needed since there's little clearance for
normal drill bits when spinning to swap.
Also, this device measures almost 6" so forget about using this in tight
spaces.
The
premise of this adapter is to speed up the process of drilling and driving by
being able to swap the bits without using the chuck. To test this, I'll see how many holes we can
drill and screws we can drive in about two minutes time. I'll do this with the HalfTime and compare it
with time it takes switching out a bit and driver with the chuck.
Using
the HalfTime first, I pre-drill eight holes in the plywood and switch to the
driver to set the screws. I'm able to
get all eight screws in place and have time to drill and add a ninth screw with
a time of 2:05.
Now, I
drill nine holes and swap to the bit driver the old fashioned way using the
chuck. I even have time to swap out to
drill a tenth hole and swap back to set the screw. The total time for this comes to roughly
2:10.
I
find the HalfTime to be light but clumsy to use. It also doesn't speed up my time drilling and
driving in this case. The size range of
usable bits is exceptionally limited to allow flipping. Plus, it's not for use on masonry or metal.
It
looks like the HalfTime Drill Driver gets a NO for this week's "Does it Work?"
test. The HalfTime Drill Driver set cost
us $20 at a local business.
