Auburn junior swimmer Kyle Owens added another accolade to his ever-growing list as he was named a Capital One Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Owens was named to the second team in the At-Large category.
"This honor for Kyle is another testament to all of his hard work, both in the pool and in the classroom," Auburn head coach Brett Hawke said. "He has been a great leader and role model for this team, and we're very excited to have his leadership and talents at Auburn for another season."
Owens, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., had a breakout season in 2011-12 as he helped lead Auburn's men to their 16th consecutive SEC swimming and diving championship. He won two individual SEC titles in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, and he was part of four winning relay teams (200 and 400 medley relay; 400 and 800 freestyle relay). Along with a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley, he finished with 57 individual points at the SEC Championships and was runner-up for the SEC Commissioner's Trophy. Owens also earned five All-America honors this season to bring his career total to 10, helping lead the Tigers to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, and he is qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in two events.
Owens was also named the SEC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for swimming and diving, majoring in biomedical engineering with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average. He recorded a 4.0 GPA in four of his first five semesters as an Auburn student-athlete.
He was one of five Southeastern Conference student-athletes named to the team, and he was one of 10 swimmers and divers nationwide to receive the honor. He becomes the sixth Auburn swimmer or diver in the last six years and the 11th all-time to earn a nod for the Capital One Academic All-America Team.
The Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. A total of 45 student-athletes in these sports nationwide were named Academic All-Americans with 15 named to each of the three teams.
