LOXLEY, AL (WSFA) -

Two inmates from the Alabama Department of Corrections who were picking up trash on west bound Interstate-10 near Loxley, were struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning. One inmate was killed. The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m.

Kenric Isiah Turner, 32, was pronounced dead on the scene. Kelvin Dejan Jordan, 37, was flown by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center.

ADOC says the two were part of a five inmate road crew picking up trash along the interstate and were classified as minimum custody and supervised by the ADOC. A van with strobe lights and roadside signage was present alerting drivers to be cautious and aware of litter crews at work, according to ADOC.

Interstate 10 was closed at mile marker 46 while the Department of Public Safety and the Loxley Police Department investigates the accident.

Both inmates are assigned to the Loxley Community Work Center. Turner was sentenced out of Madison County on Dec. 28, 2009, and was serving a 15 year term for child abuse.

Jordan was sentenced out of Lamar County on Jan. 20, 2010, and is serving a 15 year term for theft of property.

The Alabama Department of Corrections said in a statement that it "wishes to share our sincere condolences with the families of both men."

Charges in this case have not been filed.
