MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Police need your help as they try to solve a string of burglary cases in the Capital City. The alleged thieves are going into office buildings after hours and stealing laptops - 47 so far.
MPD detectives say the alleged thieves targeted offices at the Carmichael Center and the Sterling Centre next door on Carmichael Road, as well as the Merchant Capital building at EastChase in Montgomery.
Police believe the men seen here in surveillance pictures enter the buildings before closing time.
"They stay inside the building, whether they hid, we're not sure where they stayed inside the building but they did stay inside the building until the offices had closed and once it appeared that everyone had left the building, they committed the crimes," said Corporal B.E. Thornell, of the Montgomery Police Department.
Thornell said the first theft was in 2006. Others were reported in January and the most recent was in May of this year. 47 laptops have been stolen so far, losses worth more than $40,000.
I'm not sure why they're taking laptops, I would think that it is an item that's easy to wipe reload, and resell," Thornell said.
None of the laptops have been recovered, but police don't think any information has been compromised because of encryption technology on the laptops.
