Ala. GOP candidate removed from ballot

Posted: Updated:

The Alabama Republican Party removed one of its candidates from the ballot following his arrest on felony charges of traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act and electronic solicitation of a child.

The party's candidate selection committee took the action against Chuck Hunter, who was the party's nominee to run for a circuit judgeship in Jefferson County against Democratic incumbent Houston Brown.

The Birmingham News reported (http://bit.ly/MF17Lr ) that an attorney for Hunter said he would step down if the party returned the $2,400 qualifying fee he paid to run, but the committee rejected that offer.

Hoover police arrested Hunter on Wednesday.

Court records show he remained in the county jail on Monday. The Republican Party has until mid-July to pick a replacement for Hunter on the ballot.
