JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Male students in Jefferson County will now be allowed to wear earrings after the school board voted this morning to repeal its policy banning them.

The vote comes after the Southern Poverty Law Center sent a letter to the board on behalf of Hueytown High School student Hunter Mahaffey.

School officials made Mahaffey remove his earring studs, citing a district-wide policy that "ear jewelry may be worn by females only."
