WARRIOR, AL (WBRC) -
A Blount County family is accusing an acquaintance of stealing thousands of dollars from them and now Blount County Sheriff's Deputies are preparing to arrest the woman.
The McGuffies tell FOX6 News they thought they were helping Melissa Snider with a place to stay while her teenage daughter was dying of cancer in a hospital. Blount County investigators say that while Snider does in fact have a teenage daughter, she is not sick or dying as Snider told the family.
"The daughter actually, other than the fact that her mom is claiming that she's dying of cancer, the daughter has nothing to do with this," Blount County Sheriff's Investigator Leonard Chambless said.
Michael McGuffie, Jr. says he and Snider went to high school together and recently she got back in touch with his sister through Facebook.
The family says Snider led them to believe that her daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and she needed somewhere to stay while her daughter was in the hospital. She stayed in the family's home for about three weeks.
"I know it sounds like we're stupid, but no. I just was, you know, trying to help her," Michael McGuffie, Sr. said.
The McGuffies grew suspicious of Snider when Michael, Jr. says his mom noticed charges she had no knowledge of on her credit cards and checks started bouncing.
Michael, Jr. says he confronted Snider.
"I actually called her on speaker phone and asked her to come clean with it. She said she didn't have anything to do with it and grabbed her stuff and jumped in the car and we actually haven't heard from her since."
Wednesday, Blount County deputies said the expect to serve warrants for Snider's arrest as soon as Thursday, June 21.
