A Phenix City bridge in need of repair will be getting an update thanks to state funding.
The city
just received a $640,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation
for the 10th Avenue Bridge project.
Currently,
the one lane bridge has a four ton weight limit - meaning school buses and
emergency vehicles like fire trucks - cannot use that portion of road. Instead these
vehicles being forced to make a seven mile detour to avoid the bridge.
Phenix City Engineer Angel Moore says, "We have
another one lane bridge also on 12th Avenue that we are going to apply for in
the next round. Since the structures cost so much, any additional funds we can
get means we can replace more."
Phenix City
will be obligated to make a 20% match for the total cost.
The 10th
Avenue Bridge project is slated to be done by December of this year.
