MONTGOMERY, AL -

A few hires were made in school leadership and two Central Office positions in special called meetings of the Montgomery County Board of Education Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Two principals were transferred, two others were named as first time MPS principals, and one principal has been tapped to fill an important central administrative position.

Brewtech High School Principal Sophia Johnson has been named to head the Student Support Services Office, formally PALS. April Lee, principal at Pintlala Elementary School, will become principal at Brewtech. Ms. Lee served as a career tech specialist for the system for several years.

Shannon Schmidt will become the principal at Pintlala. For the past two years she has served as the MPS Positive Behavior Coach. She also worked as an assistant principal at Brewbaker Primary, Highland Gardens Elementary, and McKee Elementary. Ms. Schmidt holds administrative certification from Alabama State University, an educational specialist degree from Auburn Montgomery, and masters and bachelors degrees from Troy University.

The board named Darold Boswell, Lt. Col (PhD), USAF (retired) as the new director of logistics for the system. Dr. Boswell managed the fraud, waste, and abuse program for the USAF, was the chair of the Division of Aerospace Studies for Alabama State University, and spent much of his military career working in human resources. He holds a doctorate degree from Capella University, a masters from Troy University, and a bachelors from Alabama State University.

Debra Webster will become the principal at Goodwyn Middle School. Meredith Bishop, who had been named as Goodwyn's principal, will move to Wilson Elementary School. The position at Wilson came available when Tennille Wallace, who was offered the slot, accepted a higher paying position from a school district in the Midwest.

For two years Ms. Webster led a team of 24 staff members as a school improvement leader with the Alabama Department of Education. She worked with some of the state's lowest performing schools including those in Midfield City. She worked in various curriculum positions at the state Department of Education for five years before becoming a school improvement leader. She was a teacher for Auburn City Schools prior to joining the state Department of Education. Ms. Webster holds a masters degree from Troy University and a bachelors from Jacksonville State University.

"We are thrilled Ms. Webster is coming on board to lead Goodwyn," said Superintendent Barbara Thompson. "As we looked at our staff, it was clear that her skills were perfect for the middle school and Ms. Bishop has the experience and drive that Wilson needs. We now have our principal team in place. All our new principals join the rest of our administrators on July first to prepare for the new school year."
