National protestors join Occupy Birmingham over air quality

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Air quality was the focus for National Occupy protesters, who made a stop in Birmingham.

They joined members of Occupy Birmingham to protest in front of Alabama Power yesterday. The group says it wants Alabama Power to stop lobbying against the Clean Air Act.

Occupy Birmingham members say they would like to meet with the company's board of directors to show them their plan for a cleaner environment.

"We're not asking them to spend a single additional cent on anything we propose. Really, all we're asking them to do is shift their money from lobbying against the Clean Air Act which protects our children and our elderly and shift that money to renewable energy which will further protect our children and our elderly," said Allyn Hudson with Occupy Birmingham.

Alabama Power says Occupy Birmingham is only telling half the story. A company spokesperson says Alabama Power has invested $3-billion in meeting cleaner air standards and Southern Company has more investment in renewable energy than any other company in the U.S.
