Decision Day comes for Birmingham BOE, AEA not happy

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

It is decision day for the Birmingham School Board. Members will vote today on a plan that would cut $12-million from its budget.

It is a plan that has the state superintendent's support, but the Alabama Education Association feels differently. The AEA will be at the school board meeting urging leaders to reject their own plan.

The association says it is ready to take legal action against the Birmingham School Board to prevent cuts. Secretaries and instructional aides would be cut, but not highly paid central administrators.

"This plan goes after those folks in the middle. None of these folks are getting fired because they do a bad job, so we're not getting rid of the bad employees. We're supposedly trying to generate revenue by saving high priced administrators, that none of those folks are losing their jobs. They all have jobs, I've gone through the list," said the AEA's Lance Hyche.

Today's school board meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
