Birmingham lawyer Chuck Hunter has been indicted on a federal charge of attempting to entice a minor for sex.

Hunter, who had been running for the position of Jefferson County Circuit Court judge prior to his arrest, is charged with using the Internet and a phone to "attempt to persuade a person he believed to be a 14-year-old boy to engage in a sexual act," U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance said Friday.

Hunter was arrested June 13 by Hoover Police on state charges of enticing a minor for sex and traveling to meet a minor for sex. Police say the person Hunter was trying to meet for sex was an undercover cop posing as a minor in those internet conversations.

Hunter bonded out of the Jefferson County Jail on the state charges on Wednesday, but the next morning he was arrested at his Southside Birmingham home by Homeland Security Investigators and U.S. Marshals.

Following his June 13 arrest, Hunter was removed from the ballot for the Jefferson County Circuit Judge position.
