Former AU swimmer in Day 4 of U.S. Olympic Trials

Former Auburn swimmers Eric Shanteau and Adam Klein advanced to the men's 200-meter breaststroke semifinals with their preliminary swims Thursday morning to highlight Auburn's fourth day at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.

Shanteau, a 2006 Auburn graduate who has already qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team after a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke Tuesday night, will be the third seed in the semifinals after a time of 2:11.57 in his preliminary heat. He will look to make his second appearance in the 200 breaststroke in the Olympics after competing in the event at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Klein, who completed his eligibility in the 2011 season and graduated in December, will also swim the semifinal after posting the 11th-best time in prelims with a 2:13.07. It marks a measure of redemption for the New Orleans native after finishing 17th in the same event at Olympic Trials in 2008.

Rising junior Peter Haas swam in the second heat, posting a time of 2:21.37 to finish 94th overall. Former Tiger Mark Gangloff was entered in the event, but did not swim.

In the 100-meter freestyle, Tyler McGill was the top Auburn finisher, barely missing the semifinals with a 17th-place time of 49.87. Recent graduate Kohlton Norys was 26th overall with a 50.03, and Karl Krug clocked a 50.76 to take 51st overall. Another former Tiger, Bryan Lundquist, posted a 51.00 to finish 71st overall, and rising junior Zane Grothe recorded his fourth lifetime-best mark in as many days with a 51.04 in his heat to take 74th overall.

Spring 2012 graduate Drew Modrov (51.22), rising sophomore Allen Browning (51.57), rising junior TJ Leon (51.65) and former Auburn swimmer Joe Pascale (52.15) also were among the 165 competitors in the 100 free prelims.

Auburn had no entries in the women's 200 butterfly preliminaries, the morning's other event.

The fourth night of finals gets underway at 7 p.m. CT with a live national broadcast on NBC. The 200 breaststroke semifinals will begin at approximately 7:34 p.m.
