MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Montgomery firefighters spent nearly 12 hours on the scene where a large fire broke out downtown Monday morning. It took approximately two hours to bring the fire under control at the Standard Roofing Company business, but crews stayed until nearly 5pm to make sure smoldering sections of the building didn't re-ignite.
According to Lt. Kenneth Jones of the MFD, units arrived on the scene of the fire at 516 North McDonough Street shortly after 6am. The building was fully engulfed in flames and thick, black smoke could be seen billowing into the air for miles.
The owner of the business was on vacation at the time he got the call. He quickly made the return trip to the capital city after learning the news.
Three firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze and are being treated for minor injuries.
None of Standard Roofing's employees were in the building at the time of the fire.
An investigation into how the fire started is under way. Lt. Jones says the Arson Division is on scene as a matter of policy as officials work to determine the cause of the fire's ignition.
