TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
Most people will set off fireworks on the Fourth of July. The University of Alabama will set off a different kind of bang: workers will implode the Rose Towers dormitory.
FOX6 News will carry the implosion live on Good Day Alabama. The implosion will be at 8 a.m.
A public viewing area for the demolition will be set up in the Riverside East parking lot. Parking will be available in the lots around Shelby Hall and at the Campus Drive parking deck. UA encourages visistors to take Hackberry Lane from University Boulevard to reach parking.
The building is being demolished to make way for newer student housing on campus. Rose Towers is 13 stories tall and was built in 1969.
Schools officials explained Monday why it's better to use explosives rather than a wrecking ball to level the building.
"This is the best way to address a structure such as this, given the height of it. And you can't bring equipment in, there's a danger factor when you do that. There's potential for anything to fall on the equipment, so anything above 4 or 5 stories this is the best way to handle it," Tom Leopard with UA Facilities said.
