Alabama faces a severe blood supply shortage

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

With severe weather striking many parts of the nation, blood donation centers need your help.  There's a shortage of blood in most states, especially Alabama.

Every summer is a struggle when schools close and regular donors travel, but right now the blood supply is approaching emergency levels.  LifeSouth blood banks are facing severe shortages for all blood types across Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Tomorrow, on the Fourth of July, LifeSouth is opening all donor centers for the holiday, hoping that people will give the gift of life on our nation's Independence Day.

It takes about 40 minutes total to donate blood.  Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds and complete a health questionnaire.  A photo ID is also required.

The Red Cross is also putting out an emergency call for blood donations.  Officials with that organization say they have a 50,000 donations shortfall, with an urgent need for all blood types.
