Sometimes first is just best. And sometimes it just makes more sense. The city of Brundidge gets all dressed up in red, white, and blue for its annual 4th of July parade. It happens every year on the last Saturday in June.
"That's just when we do it," said Brundidge mayor Jimmy Ramage. They've been doing it that way for more than 30 years. "It started back in the late 70's we had two food manufacturers and a Fruit of the Loom plant that would close on the last Friday in June for a week so all the families could vacation together. We tried to figure out a way to celebrate with all those people and keep them in town before they left for the beach and other things during their week off."
So they celebrated when the people were still in town, and the date stuck. It doesn't take too long to tell Brundidge is a proud, patriotic city. "Our national guard has been activated several times since 1990."
They town even has a Liberty Tree, which is pretty rare. "The Liberty Tree is the tree revolutionary fighters would meet under to plot against the British in the war. They had to fly their flag to let the other fighters know when they would meet about the war."
Just look around, there's plenty of patriotism in the city of Brundidge. They just like to start their party a little early.
