MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Former Georgia running back Isaiah Crowell has officially been admitted to Alabama State University. He will start classes Monday and play for the Hornets this fall.

Crowell will be eligible to play immediately because ASU is an FCS level school.

"We actively researched Isaiah both as a person as well as an athlete," Alabama State head football coach Reggie Barlow said. "We are aware of his current issues, but also believe in helping young people. We believe that Isaiah has learned from his circumstances and that he will be a quality student-athlete at Alabama State."

Crowell was kicked off the Georgia football team last week after getting arrested and charged with a felony count of possessing a weapon in a school zone, a felony count of altered identification mark and a misdemeanor count of possession/carrying a concealed weapon.

Crowell could face a fine of up to $10,000 and a jail sentence of 2-10 years if found guilty of weapons possession on school property, while a guilty verdict for criminal use of an article with an altered ID mark carries a sentence of 1-5 years.

Crowell was ranked as the country's No. 1 running back coming out of high school. He was named the SEC Freshman of the year after rushing for 850 yards with five touchdowns.
