MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
A casino developer who pleaded guilty in Alabama's gambling corruption case is trying to avoid spending more than 20 years in prison.
Country Crossing casino developer Ronnie Gilley filed court papers asking U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson to be lenient during sentencing .
Gilley's attorney filed the request for leniency saying, "During America's economic struggle, it is visionaries like Mr. Gilley that will put this nation back on her feet."
Gilley's attorney argues that he wasn't smart enough to be the ring leader of a complex bribery and conspiracy scheme and that he lacked knowledge of Alabama's political system.
The attorney also argues that BamaJam could be adversely affected by Gilley's incarceration.
Gilley testified during the Federal Gambling Corruption trial that his involvement with BamaJam was completely limited and it was "just a name" that he owned.
The attorney is seeking to get Gilley six months home confinement, three years of supervised released and community service.
