BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Former University of Alabama and NFL linebacker Saleem Rasheed has been sentenced after he pleaded guilty to felony charges.
The judge handed down a sentence of 8 months in prison and 8 months of home confinement on Wednesday at the Hugo L. Black Building in Birmingham. Rasheed pleaded guilty in March to charges of food stamp fraud and falsely claiming a woman as his wife on immigration forms. Rasheed has served 2 1/2 months in jail, leaving 5 1/2 remaining in his prison sentence.
Several family members of Rasheed spoke in court. His mother, a brother and his wife all asked the judge for leniency in sentencing. Rasheed broke down in tears when he saw his wife start crying.
This may not be the only sentence Rasheed could be serving. Separately, he is charged with engaging in sex acts with two students while he was a teacher at Woodlawn High School.
