TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
The University of Alabama trustees announced today that they have selected Dr. Guy Bailey as the new University President.
In his most recent position, Bailey served as President of Texas Tech since 2008. He is a two-time graduate of the University of Alabama and is originally from Montgomery.
According to a press release, Bailey attended the University from 1968-1974, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in English.
Bailey was among 100 candidates for the post and was named the front runner last week. He arrived in Tuscaloosa this week to participate in a public interview Wednesday at the Bryant Conference Center.
Bailey said today that "becoming president allows me give back to the university that did do much for me."
Bailey commented on several important topics raised by the trustees today. He said that he wants to be personally involved in athletic recruiting if coaches invite him to do so and talked briefly about how he will control operating costs before resorting to tuition increases. He said recruiting out of state students will help this mission.
