Residents optimistic about casino expansion

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

The expansion of Creek Casino Wetumpka promises to bring new jobs and commerce to Wetumpka, but what do the people who live around the casino think about it all?

People in the River Oaks neighborhood said they've had no problems with the casino in over the past decade, and don't expect any now.

"We had great fear about our security, and we have not found those things to come about," said Bettie Welden, President of the River Oaks Homeowners Association.  "We've felt very safe even with them there, and when we've brought issues to them, they've been very quick to respond."

"I don't gamble, my family doesn't gamble, so it doesn't bother me at all that they're over there," said Dot Pollard, who also lives in the neighborhood.   "We haven't had any problems, I've been here 11 years."

But as the casino begins its biggest expansion since its opening, traffic is the main concern people in the area have.

It's not just the visitors, but also for 1,200 construction workers expected at the casino during the project.

"That's a lot of cars, so how do we manage the traffic," said Wetumpka Mayor Jerry Willis.  ‘We going to have to have close communication with PCI on how to deal with the traffic."

Welden said the neighborhood association plans to meet with the Creeks frequently about the impact of the casino project.
