MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It was a big day for Montgomery Public Schools. City and school officials gathered for the groundbreaking for the new Park Crossing High School at 8:30 this morning.

The new school, when finished, will sit on the newly named Park Crossing Road that connects Taylor Road to Ray Thorington Road behind the Hampstead Development.  It is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2013 school year and will be home to more than 1000 students.  The price tag is more than 27 million dollars.

Over the past several years Montgomery's population has shifted east.  When this school was first discussed, the plan was to build it in order to prevent losing students to other parts of the region or to private schools, adding slots and improving facilities.

After months of meetings, planning and voting, the new school plans were made and after another long process, the school colors and mascot were chosen.  The mascot for Park Crossing High School is the Thunderbirds and the colors are navy blue, silver and red.  They were chosen as a nod to the area's ties to the Air Force.
