OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -
A Lee County deputy and his K-9 partner were hospitalized with severe injuries Sunday morning after trying to avoid a deer in the roadway.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says the crash happened around 3:00am on Alabama Highway 51 South, also known as Marvin Parkway.
Sheriff Jones says the deputy was traveling southbound when a deer ran out in front of the patrol vehicle. When the deputy attempted to swerve, his vehicle left the roadway, struck a culvert and came to rest in a ditch.
Sheriff Jones said the deputy suffered multiple injuries to his neck and head area and was airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center. The deputy also sustained facial fractures, but the Sheriff says the injuries are non-life threatening and full recovery is expected.
His canine partner suffered several injuries including a cut to the face. He was taken to a local vet and is also expected to fully recover.
Since not all of the deputy's family members have been notified, his name is not being released at this time.
Sheriff Jones did tell WSFA 12 News the deputy is a 12 year veteran.
