BESSEMER, AL (WAFF) -
One inmate died behind bars Thursday after another inmate reportedly stabbed the man to death following a fight the two had.
The Alabama Department of Corrections said Steven Newell, 23, was stabbed at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Ala., around 5:30 a.m. by James Bennett, a 43-year-old inmate serving a life term sentence for three counts of assault and multiple other charges from 1993.
Newell was serving out an eight year sentence for assault and theft in Calhoun County in November, 2010.
The facility is currently undergoing an internal investigation into what exactly happened Thursday morning. The Department of Forensic Sciences will perform an autopsy to determine the actual cause Newell's death.
William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison housing approximately 1,500 inmates.
