HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Chick-fil-a set a sales record as thousands flocked to restaurants to make a statement about the restaurants stand in support of the biblical definition of marriage.
"We are very grateful and humbled by the incredible turnout of loyal Chick-fil-A customers on August 1 at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country," said Steve Robinson, Executive Vice President of Marketing.
The company would only say sales were unprecedented but it did not release any sales figures.
Throughout the state, Raycom TV stations captured video of long lines at restaurants around Alabama as people waited in long lines to patronize the restaurant as a way of showing support on a day deemed Chick-fil-A appreciation day.
"I don't think I've seen anything like this in the 34 years I've been with Chick-fil-A," said Huntsville franchise owner Barry Wesson.
Chick-fil-A appreciation day was started by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to show support for the chain after gay rights activists criticized the company's stance on same-sex marriages.
Same-sex marriage advocates have called for their own show of support Friday with a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A."
