The American Red Cross has launched a new hurricane app, designed specifically for people who live in areas affected by hurricanes.

The app offers hurricane alerts and severe weather prepardness plans. It also gives users the ability to let their friends and family know they're OK during a hurricane with an "I'm safe" option that will send out a message through various social media outlets.

The free app offers several other features, including:

-Location-based NOAA weather alerts for the United States and its territories users can share on social networks

-Remote monitoring of personalized weather alerts where family and friends reside

-Locations of open Red Cross shelters

-Simple steps and checklists people can use to create a family emergency plan

-Preloaded content that gives users instant access to critical action steps, even without mobile connectivity

-Toolkit with flashlight, strobe light and audible alarm

-Badges users can earn through interactive quizzes and share on social networks.

The app can be used on both iPhone and Android smartphones. Find out more at http://www.redcross.org/HurricaneApp.
