Alabama's 2012 'Back to School' sales tax holiday is underway

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The tax-free shopping holiday weekend is now underway here in Alabama.  Shoppers can take advantage big savings this weekend on clothing, school supplies and electronics.

This is the seventh year that the state has held the sales tax holiday.  The weekend is designed to help people save money, but it also stimulates the state's economy because more people will go out to shop and will likely buy things that are not tax free in addition to the tax free items.

The sales tax holiday not only benefits back to school shoppers who are looking to buy necessities like supplies and clothing, it also benefits ordinary shoppers who buy things that fall into the tax free category.

Not everything on your child's school supply list will be tax free.  Some items that were on the list last year, like paper towels, hand sanitizer and tissues will be taxable this year.
