MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Don Siegelman, former Alabama governor, was sentenced to 78 months in prison for bribery, conspiracy and other crimes..

Siegelman was sentenced Thursday to more than six years in prison, a $50,000 fine and 500 hours of community service.

Siegelman and former HealthSouth chief Richard Scrushy were convicted in 2006. Prosecutors say they arranged $500,000 in contributions to Siegelman's campaign for a lottery in exchange for the governor appointing Scrushy to a hospital regulatory board.

"Today is a sad day for Governor Don Siegelman, his family, and our state as a whole.  Multiple charges have been thrown out of the case.  Attorneys General and political officials around the country have raised serious questions about the few remaining charges--questions which remain unanswered after this sentencing.  The Democratic Party of Alabama's thoughts and prayers are with Governor Siegelman and his family," said ADP Chairman Mark Kennedy.

Siegelman will get credit for the time he has already served while leaves 5 years, nine months remaining.

He will also be on supervised release for three years after his release.

Siegelman must surrender to begin his prison term on or before September 11, 2012.
