BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
More trouble could be ahead for the Birmingham school system. It all stems from the ongoing hearings surrounding the school board's attempt to fire Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon.
A letter sent to School Board President Edward Maddox spells it out. It was dated July 31st from Advance-Ed, a state education agency that accredits school districts. The letter states that current actions could put the school system's current and future accreditation in jeopardy. If the school system loses its accreditation, it may prevent students from getting loans and scholarships, even acceptance into universities and the military.
The school system has an October 1st deadline to submit a letter indicating how things are progressing. As for the lawsuit, the Birmingham Board of Education and the state are expected to have their final legal arguments in writing and handed to the judge on Wednesday.
The state and Superintendent Witherspoon are suing the board for trying to fire him and avoid the state's authority now that it has taken the system over. A judge is expected to rule in the case shortly after the legal arguments are turned in. The temporary restraining order keeping Witherspoon on the job and the state in control has been extended through then.
