MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
As investigators seek to find out why alleged gunman Wade Michael Page shot six people at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin on Sunday, more information has been revealed about Page's ties to racist skinhead groups.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has been tracking Wade Michael Page for years. Its Intelligence Project found Page started a racist band, End Anarchy.
"It produces hate music with ugly music," said Heidi Beirich, the Director of the Intelligence Project. "The end apathy he says in an interview is about people taking action not sitting around and complaining that the country isn't going to be all-white."
And the FBI said during a news conference on Monday that Page was not on any specific watch lists.
"Obviously people have free speech rights to say all of these terrible things like this guy says in his music," Beirich said. "But the line crossing over into violence is sometimes unclear, it's not like you can just predict that."
Beirich said there has been a dramatic increase in the number of active hate groups in the United States since President Obama took office. Since 9/11, the Sikh community has also seen faced threats from people who confuse them with Muslims because of their dress. Beirich said tolerance is the best way to combat the environment that creates hate.
