BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A Birmingham police officer has been charged with second degree assault for an incident that reportedly happened while he was off duty, the Birmingham Police Department said Thursday.
"The bottom line is we have a professional standard for on duty and off duty behavior," police chief A.C. Roper said in a release announcing the officer's arrest.
The police officer, Andrew Edison, 37, turned himself into the Jefferson County Jail on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Edison was hired by the Birmingham Police Department in January 2001 and served as a member of the Birmingham police force for 11 years. He most recently assigned to the South Precinct's Field Operations Bureau.
When the police department learned of the investigation into the assault, Edison was assigned to administrative duties. Further action will be based on the results of an internal review, the department states.
"In addition to the criminal investigation, we will insure a thorough internal investigation is conducted and reviewed to ensure the proper actions are applied," Roper said.
