DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Police say a fuel leak is the suspected cause of a boat explosion at a marina on the Tennessee River in Decatur.
One woman was taken to a hospital after the Sunday morning explosion on the boat.
Alabama Marine Police officer Larry Adams said that Lavon McPike was taken to Huntsville Hospital for treatment of burns. He said she was released by 4 p.m. Sunday.
Adams said McPike was one of eight passengers, including three men, three women and two boys. At the time of the explosion, six were aboard and two were standing beside the Sea Ray Sundancer 270, which had just been refueled.
Adams said it's fortunate that more people were not injured. Police say two people were blown off the boat into the water by the force of the explosion.
"It was a big boom. It rattled the windows," said Susan Conner, owner of Riverwalk Marina. "I looked out and I saw just a puff of smoke going up from the boat."
Conner said she had just gotten off the phone with her husband at the marina restaurant when the explosion took place.
"The next thing I saw was my gas attendant flying back and from there I was on the phone with 911and screaming for them to get off the boat because I think they were in shock," said Conner. "I just thank God that everybody was okay. It was a bad situation, but it could have been so much worse, but everybody acted."
Marina officials said there was no other damage to the boat docks or to other boats in the landing.
