Back-to-school tips for parents

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

For many kids in our area, this is the last week of freedom.  Schools in Autauga, Elmore, Montgomery and several other counties head back to school on Monday, and these last few days before school starts can be crucial in getting your child prepared to learn.

As kids head back to school, doctors say one of the most important things is that they get back on a regular sleep schedule, and the time to do it is the week before school starts.

If your kids are like most, they are probably used to staying up and sleeping in later than they would during the school year.  It is recommended that most children between the ages of three and 12 get at least 10 hours sleep.  Older students should get between 8 and 9 hours.

Doctors say kids respond best to routine and structure.  It's best to set an incrementally earlier bed time and wake up time each day.  And now is the time to start enforcing that routine because lack of sleep will usually show up faster in a child than an adult.

Parents say that getting everything ready for the first day of school ahead of time makes things less stressful.  Have their backpack ready, gather other supplies and even pick out an outfit ahead of time so you and your children don't feel rushed.

Parents can also use these last few days before school starts to get your kids excited about returning to school so they're ready to learn.

If your child isn't excited about going back to school, try making a back to school countdown on the fridge or in their room, to foster a positive attitude about going back to school.

And it might be a good idea to try going through some basic math, science and reading questions to get your child's mind in learning mode.
