GRIFFIN, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Spalding County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man whom they said failed to get help for his wife after she fell, which ultimately resulted in her death.

Deputies responded to a home on Chuli Road in Griffin on May 21 to investigate a death.

That's where deputies found Jimmy Ray Hartley, who told them that his wife, Janie Hartley, had passed away.

According to investigators, Jimmy Ray Hartley said his wife fell two weeks earlier, but he did not call 911 because he was embarrassed about the condition of their home.

Investigators told CBS Atlanta News that Jimmy Ray Hartley would feed his wife while she laid in the same location she fell, up until her death.

Jimmy Ray Hartley told CBS Atlanta News on Tuesday that his wife had been battling an illness but he did not think she was going to die. He said their home was a mess because his wife had been holding onto too many things over the years.

The couple had been married for 44 years. They lived most of their lives in Atlanta. They moved to the Griffin area about nine years ago.

He was taken into custody and charged with reckless conduct.

Still shaken by his wife's death, Jimmy Ray Hartley said he does not know how he will be able to get his home in order.
