After 49 years behind bars the nations, the nation's longest
serving female inmate is free.
Betty Smithey, 69, was sent to jail following her conviction for the
murder of a 15-month-old Phoenix girl she was babysitting in 1963.
Yesterday, members of Arizona's board of executive clemency voted
4-1 to release her.
They agreed that Smithey is no longer dangerous.
Smithey became eligible for discharge in June after Governor Jan
Brewer granted her clemency.
