Judge sentences crewmen in 2 pollution cases

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge has ordered foreign ship officers to jail time after their convictions in separate cases of covering up illegal discharges from their vessels.

The Press-Register reports (http://bit.ly/QF8jZV) that U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade handed down the sentences Wednesday.

Granade sentenced Vito La Forgia to a month of incarceration before returning to his native Italy. Authorities say La Forgia, the chief engineer aboard the Bottiglieri Challenger, rigged a bypass to dump oily waste overboard during the ship's voyage to Mobile in January.

In a separate case, Granade imposed a prison term of a year and a day on Prastana Taohim, the captain of a cargo ship that made a similar stop at the Port of Mobile last year.
