PHIL CAMPBELL, AL (WAFF) -

For students in Phil Campbell, back to school means back to portable classrooms but with a change of scenery.

This year their school zone doubles as a construction site.

As the new school year gets underway in Phil Campbell the portable units at the high school are surrounded by debris, but this year it's not from the aftermath of a tornado, it's debris from the high school that's being torn down.

As students and staff arrived early for their first day of school, so did construction crews.

They're working to remove what's left of the old Phil Campbell High School.

In just three weeks crews have managed to demolish almost the entire school, turning it into a pile of bricks.

Phil Campbell High School principal Cindy Davis said although it will be more hectic getting to and from the school this year, it's well worth it.

She said they have taken extra steps to keep everyone safe.

"It's just so exciting to see the progress. The kids know that they have got to stay confined. This is kind of a maze of walkways and all of it's gated off and fenced off and there won't be any parking in the front of the school this year. It'll all be back here behind the action," she said.

School officials said crews have a few weeks left before demolition is complete and construction of the new school will begin soon after.
