TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

The road to recovery in Tuscaloosa is still ongoing. More than a year after a deadly tornado swept through central Alabama last April, one building destroyed in the storm has reopened its doors and customers could not be more excited.

The rebuilt Krispy Kreme opened its doors at 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Owner Evan Smith says customers were camping out in front of the building since 7 p.m. on Monday night. As of 6 a.m. on Tuesday, traffic around the restaurant was backed up to 13th Street as hungry customers lined up.

Smith is the third generation in his family of Krispy Kreme owners. Smith says his grandmother brought Krispy Kreme to Tuscaloosa in the 60's.

The store was destroyed when the Tuscaloosa tornado swept through the city on April 27 of 2011. Smith says the last year and a half of rebuilding was a rough time.

"I'm just glad the hot light is on in Tuscaloosa," said Smith.
