The Environmental Protection Agency is recognizing the Alabama Department of Transportation for changes it has made to reduce pollution.
Federal officials said Thursday they presented the state agency with a leadership award at a meeting of the Southeast Diesel Collaborative in Atlanta.
The state highway department has auctioned older diesel vehicles and replaced them with equipment that meets 2007 and 2010 diesel emission standards.
It also updated more than 310 vehicles with new clean-air equipment.
The federal agency also recognized the state for having a fleet of more than 1,200 alternative vehicles and supporting the development of biofuels in Alabama. And the state is using GPS units in much of its fleet to ensure compliance with a policy against allowing vehicles to idle for long periods of time.
