Monument to Confederate general halted

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

SELMA, Ala. (AP) - A monument area dedicated to the Confederate Gen. Nathan B. Forrest and Confederate soldiers at a cemetery in Selma has been halted after complaints and protests.

Selma Mayor George Evans tells The Selma Times-Journal (http://bit.ly/PCypAJ) that supporters and opponents of the project have agreed to wait for a question about who owns the property to be decided. He said that allows people on both sides to "stand down for the moment."

The Times-Journal reports that Forrest is known as 1 of the original leaders of the Ku Klux Klan -- one reason protesters are against the plan. At the center of the debate is the question of whether the site is on public property or private property owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
