MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
As Tropical Storm Issac charts a path to the Gulf of Mexico, Governor Robert Bentley said he's in constant contact with the state's Emergency Management Agency. He said all options are on the table including a possible evacuation of the Gulf Coast.
"I will discuss on a regular basis with my EMA Director and we'll be in touch with the mayors and the county commissioners in South Alabama," the Governor said. "We'll be ready."
Officials are urging Alabama residents to prepare now from any coming storm.
"What we intend for the public to do is to have a go-kit and a plan to be personally prepared that if the power goes out or they have to evacuate that they have certain things that they can grab in an instant," said Tim Hatch, with the Alabama Department of Public Health.
ADPH is pushing its Get 10 preparedness campaign. The ten items are water, food, can opener medications, a first aid kit, flashlights, a radio, clothing personal care items and important documents. There's even one for pets as well.
"One of the things that we learned after Katrina is that pets become family members so we have ten items that you need when you evacuate with your pets, vaccination records, medical records, food."
Although it's been a while since a hurricane directly impacted Alabama, officials hope residents aren't complacent and will be well prepared if Issac comes our way.
