MOBILE, AL (WBRC) -

Dozens of Mobile County residents heeded the warnings to evacuate and spent Monday night in a Red Cross shelter.

The American Red Cross reports that more than 125 people stayed the night in one of their shelters in Mobile County. Another Red Cross shelter opened Tuesday morning and several others are prepared to open if the weather from Hurricane Isaac gets worse along Alabama's coast.

Isaac became a hurricane around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Red Cross reports on their website that the shelter at Theodore High School in Theodore, Ala. currently has 140 residents. A shelter at Semmes Middle School in Semmes, Ala. has 53.

Volunteers and vehicles from Alabama and several other states, including Nevada, Oregon, Connecticut and South Carolina, are pitching in to help manage the shelter's operations and emergency supplies.

More than 1,500 disaster workers have been deployed across the Gulf Coast to help with the Red Cross efforts in the area, the Red Cross said in a release.
