BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Hurricane Isaac is having a direct impact on the region's blood supply and many blood centers are operating on a day-to-day basis.

Two days ago the LifeSouth Blood Center in Mobile closed their doors because of Hurricane Isaac. In addition, about 30 percent of our area's blood is being shipped to the Gulf Coast area.

"They supply all the hospitals in Mobile so that's a huge, huge loss to us. Most people think about packing up batteries, food, gas, that sort of thing but when storms come we think of blood and the blood shortages we're going to have," Josh Manis, donor recruiter, said.

The Red Cross says they are dealing with the same shortages and they shipped 600 units of blood to the coast as well.

Both organizations say every blood type is needed. To find a donation center near you, visit lifesouth.org and http://www.redcrossblood.org/.
