COOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A 19th century Coosa County church has become a favorite target for vandals. Generations of families have worshipped, been married and buried there but it's getting more and more difficult to keep up the grounds.

Since the 1990s the Blue Springs Baptist Church has been the site of special events and weddings, kept up by the families that used to worship there.

But this past weekend, one caregiver came by the grounds to find windows knocked out, doors askew and even pews pulled up from the floor.

Tanya Robinson, the one who discovered the damage, says if the families can just get the church back into better shape, it could be protected as a registered historical building. But she fears that the vandalism will only get worse. This is the second time this year the building has been vandalized.

"I'm afraid we are going to come and it's not even going to be here. It's going to be burned down," Robinson said.

The Coosa County Sheriff's Department is looking into the case. If you would like to help the church recover, you can mail a check to Bill Hamilton, 808 Seminole Avenue, Sylacauga, AL 35150. Hamilton says to make the checks out to Blue Springs Cemetery.
