PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A new Arizona State University student is still years away from his driver's license, but he's attending one college level class at the age of 12.
Javier Urcuyo might very well be the youngest student ever admitted to ASU. Unfortunately, the school has no way of knowing for sure.
"He went exactly through what an incoming student would go through in order to be accepted," said Dr. Kim Landsdowne, the director at Herberger Academy.
While he had to score high on his SATs, in this case what helped Javier is that he attends the Gary K. Herberger Young Scholars Academy, which happens to be located on ASU west campus.
The private school for gifted middle school-age students offers an accelerated approach to learning while keeping an eye on those ready for college.
"We do escort him to class and we do pick him up from class," said Landsdowne.
It also doesn't hurt that he comes from a family of mathematicians.
"I do have a degree in math myself and my wife does as well," his father, Carlos Urcuyo, said.
"I want to get a Ph.D. in math ... maybe applied mathematics and I also have a passion for poetry," Javier said.
